Hasbro Playskool Heroes Transformers review

You can see from the huge smile on his face just how excited Pierre was to receive these Transformer toys to review. I remember the original Transformers cartoons and toys from the eighties - my male cousins used to transform them before my eyes while I looked on in admiration and totally failed to do the same, despite them being several years younger than me ! - but Pierre doesn't really know much about them so I wasn't sure how interested he would be. Well, the answer was, very !

The first toy that we unpacked was the Heatwave the Fire Bot toy from the Transformers Rescue Bots Energize range. Specially designed for younger children, this one transforms very easily from robot to fire truck and back again. You just need to pull on the ladder for the transformation to kick in, so Pierre was very proud to manage it all by himself.

He loved pushing the fire truck around on the floor and also walking his robot around the table making laser gun noises ! Definitely a big hit.

Next we discovered the larger 26cm Optimus Prime model. This one is electronic and has a button to press that makes his rather impressive saw move round. It needs 2 AAA batteries which come ready installed for demo purposes but which will need changing rapidly.

Now, what made me laugh about this one is that all the adults who picked it up tried to transform it, following the perfect logic that all Transformers must by essence be transformable. Well, not this one - this toy does not convert, which was a bit of a let down, so make sure you know this before buying it for a child who will probably expect it to convert too. We looked all over the box and couldn't see any mention that it does not convert so I definitely think this should be made clearer, to avoid disappointment.

Once we realised this and handed it over to Pierre to play with, he had great fun though and didn't mind in the slightest because he was having a whale of a time making the saw spin !

The Playskool Heroes Transformers Rescue Bots target little boys (and girls) aged 3-7. Pierre is 4 and, judging by his reaction, I'd say thay have perfectly catered to their target audience.

star rating : 4/5

RRP : £13 for the smaller convertible Transformers, £25 for the electronic Optimus Prime
