When Vivesoy recently sent us through a couple of cartons of their dairy-free soy drink to try out with the Madhouse Mini-testers, I wasn't sure what they'd think, to be honest. We're lucky enough to not have any food intolerances in the family so we don't usually go out of our way to buy dairy-free milk substitutes, but that was the whole point. Since launching in the UK at the beginning of the year, Vivesoy have gone from strength to strength and their mission is now to get more people talking about, drinking and enjoying soy milk on a day to day basis, rather than just because of dietary requirements.
I started off putting the chocolate flavour Vivesoy on the breakfast table and seeing if anyone spontaneously went for it.
Sure enough, Pierre asked for some "chocolate milk", closely followed by Juliette. They both drank it and said it was nice. Nobody had even realised it wasn't regular chocolate milk. (We always buy skimmed milk so you may notice more of a difference if you're used to buying full fat milk though.)
I decided to try the other carton - the plain Vivesoy - in cooking to see how it would fare. I used it to replace my usual skimmed milk in custard and cupcakes and they both came out perfectly. Again, nobody noticed any difference.
They're actually a healthy option too. Vivesoy explain that their drinks are cholesterol free, low in calories (from 88 calories in a 200ml glass), rich in anti-oxidants and isoflavones, contain Omegas 3 and 6 and Vitamins A & D and are a source of fibre. They can be drunk cold or hot and used in tea, coffee, over cereals or when making desserts.
The whole range includes Vanilla, Chocolate and Cappuccino flavours, as well as Light, Unsweetened and Natural options. I love the fact that you can keep a carton in the cupboard as a standby for baking or sudden milk emergencies, because it doesn't need refrigerating until it has been opened. If you're drinking it cold, it will taste better straight from the fridge though.
